When do You Layer Your Hyaluronic Acid?

Due to my Month of: I’ve ditched my exfoliators experiment, I’m now using products with a focus on sensitive skin and hydration. Hyaluronic acid is one of those ingredients that is a hydration game changer. It not just hydrates, but it plumps your skin too!

Hyaluronic acid is unique in that it locks in moisture, unlike other acids, which can cause skin to become more dry and possibly irritated. It’s easier to know when you should apply treatments and serums into your routine, but what about hyaluronic acid? Does it replace your essence? Is it considered a treatment? Do you layer it on top of all your other products?

The interesting thing about hyaluronic acid is that it needs to be applied to damp skin to work properly. Basically as soon as it comes into contact with moisture it does its hydration thing. So I typically apply mine like a primer for my skincare, RIGHT after I wash and tone (or mist my face). If all else fails, rule of thumb, it needs to be applied with, but before heavy products like oils or creams to help activate. If you apply hyaluronic acid onto dry skin, it can actually pull out your skins moisture causing dryness or further irritations. Recommend applying this product both day and night.

So an example routine could be:
1. Cleanse
2. Tone
3. Hyaluronic Acid (possibly spritz a little face mist after)
4. Serum
5. Moisturizer/Oil
6. SPF

Tips:
Let hyaluronic acid totally dry before your apply serums or moisturizer. It’s a great ingredient to pair with other AHAs or Vitamin C, since those ingredients tend to be drying. If you apply you hyaluronic acid on top of moisturizers and oils, like I did once, it can cause your products to pill or react like oil and water — don’t do that.
